Some recent research has shown that as many as 1 in 1000 women may develop a DVT in their pregnancy and 2 in 1000 women may have this problem following birth. The use of an Airogym Exerciser (especially when used lying down and pushing against a wall or the end of the bed) during pregnancy will not only RELIEVE PAINFUL SWOLLEN ANKLES AND LEGS, but will also reduce the risk of the formation of a DVT.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a clot of blood that can occur in the leg veins. During pregnancy the veins are more elastic due to the action of the pregnancy hormone progesterone. As a result some pregnant women may experience varicose veins, tired legs and swollen ankles and legs. In short, the circulation may be impaired and a small blood clot may form in one of the deeper veins.
There are not necessarily any outward signs of a DVT, as the clot usually occurs in the deep veins of the leg and can be undetectable. However, during pregnancy, swollen calves or thighs, with areas that appear hot or red could indicate the formation of a DVT.
Tiredness and immobility, as well as the strain put on the pelvic area due to pregnancy weight all contribute to sluggish blood circulation. If the blood circulation is poor, it can result in the pooling of blood in the deep veins, with the result that the blood thickens and becomes sticky. This can then lead to the formation of clots. The situation becomes most dangerous if a small part of this blood clot breaks off and moves through the veins to produce a potentially life threatening embolism in the lungs, heart or brain.
